As an artist who works in digital imaging as well don't be discouraged by those who press a button to acheive the same results.
If everybody did that then nobody would paint anymore because a photo can render the same scene in 1 second.
You are developing a technique, or style and that is what is important. Photoshop filters can only do so much as they are simply pre-programmed steps... they have no intuition.
